Meet Ayo
Age: 28
Profession: Project coordinator
Where your people dem from? Nigeria, my family is Yoruba.
Where are you from in the UK? Watford
What made you attend a BWOW ride? The BWOW beginner friendly group rides seemed the most beginner friendly out of all the cycling groups or clubs I could find. Even though I had a bike, I thought giving people the option to use Santander bikes for some rides was great. Also, I wanted to meet Black women in cycling, since it’s still really dominated by white men.
How did you hear about BWOW? Instagram
How did you begin cycling? I hadn’t really ridden since uni, but I got a bike again in 2020 during one of the many lockdowns. It was the cheapest hybrid at Halfords, because I wasn’t sure if I would stick with it, but I ended up getting super into it.
What was your first BWOW ride? My first ride with BWOW was through Hackney and along the canals.
What did you think of it? I really enjoyed it! Everyone was really friendly and stopped to help people with any issues with their bike.
Why do you enjoy BWOW? It’s always such a warm and vibrant atmosphere. Being surrounded by Black women who are all into cycling feels really special.
What can Black women who attend a BWOW ride expect? A welcoming environment to get used to cycling with other people while having lots of social fun along the way.
What keeps you coming back? I always have a good time out with BWOW.
How has cycling changed your life? I’ve met so many cool people that I never would have come across otherwise and the exercise has been really good for my mental health.
In 3 words describe BWOW: Fun, friendly and fabulous.
