Meet Makeda

Age: 37

Profession: Filmmaker

A smiling woman wearing sunglasses, a helmet, and athletic clothing, standing next to her bicycle on a city street. Behind her, a man on a motorized delivery tricycle is holding a camera, and there are people walking along the sidewalk, with trees and buildings in the background.

Where your people dem from? Curaçao

Where are you from in the UK? Huddersfield, Yorkshire.

What made you attend a BWOW ride? I came to the group from a member chatting to me on a train. I knew that her warmth would translate to the wider group and I was right.

How did you hear about BWOW? From the woman on the train.

What was your first BWOW ride? Hyde Park. It was the perfect soft launch!

How has being part of this cycling group impacted your confidence on and off the bike? My confidence on the bike has improved massively. From riding with more experienced members, I learn and I’ve also built confidence through encouraging members who are more nervous to improve their confidence in turn.

What's your favourite thing about riding with a group of Black women? My favourite thing about riding with other Black women is the innate understanding we have of each other, our jokes and how the group is able to connect generations pretty much seamlessly.

What keeps you coming back? The social aspect of BWOW keeps me coming back. It is a space where I can relax, be understood and have fun while indulging my love of cycling.

What advice would you give a Black woman nervous about joining a cycling group for the first time? Just join, maybe starting with a park ride. You couldn’t find a more inclusive group. We embrace all skill levels (and bikes) and you’ll have a good time while we ride and on our (sometimes) long tea breaks. The laughs and community I have built through the group has been a wonderful addition to my life over the last few years.

In 3 words describe BWOW: Fun, understanding and discovery.
